Whale songs bid farewell, carrying whispers of new beginnings.
Chapter 6 Excerpt: Oliver Oddsocks Pirates Treasure
When the party was winding down, Oliver picked up his pack and said goodbye to Jenni, “I have to get back home. My adventure is over. It has been wonderful meeting you and the people of your town.”
“How will you get home? You should stay here. I don’t have a brother and you would be a good one. Everyone in the town loves you.” Jenni asked.
“Thank you. It’s nice that you would have me for your brother. As far as me getting home, I always seem to get there. Enjoy the rest of the celebration. You deserve it for your bravery and courage.” He gave her a hug and walked toward the beach.
Oliver walked down to the wharf, waving at the fishermen tending their nets for the next day’s fishing. He walked down onto the beach until he was out of sight of the town. The bright moon helped him see the way. He heard whale songs and the splashing of tails on the water as if they, too, were saying goodbye.
This adventure seemed more dangerous to Oliver than any he had been on so far. It was difficult, but Oliver had learned a great deal. He sat down on the sand and let out a big breath. He stretched his neck and rubbed his head. Oliver laughed, remembering a lyric in a book he had read, and sang back to the whales in his loudest singing voice.
The morning comes on calm fair seas
There are blessed mornings just like these
Well-rested they arose from their sleep
For these men who work upon the deep
Hardy men tanned and hard of a certain kind
The weather fair with a following wind
Rising from the watch with the morning bells
The boatswain yelled loud and clear,
“All is well. All is well. All is well. All is well.”
The whales called back as if they heard Oliver sing. “Ooommmm oooph looooo ruuuuummm.”
His feet began to tingle. He felt dizzy and sat down on the sand. Toppling over, he fell asleep.
