A loud “thump” happened in the car next to them. Becki let out a startled cry and hugged Oliver’s arm harder.
Chapter 5 Excerpt: Oliver Oddsocks The Phantom Train
Oliver sat up, hanging on, as the train continued to rock from side to side. He tried his flashlight again. It didn’t work.
Becki yelled out over the noise, “Are you or were you a person?”
The roar and rocking suddenly stopped. The silence caused Oliver some concern. He whispered, “No sound, not a cricket, or the sound of the wind in the trees, nothing.” His voice sounded hollow and tinny.
Becki pulled on Oliver’s sleeve, “Look!”
At the other end of the car was showing a pale blue ball of light about the size of a baseball. It pulsed and grew until it was the size of a soccer ball. It put out a bell sound once, Bong, twice Bong, three times, Bong. Then the blue light vanished.
Becki and Oliver sat still, looking at each other, expecting more to come but having no idea what. The answer was weird. Their hair began to rise up on their head, arms, and neck. The air felt electric, making them shiver. Then they began to rise, floating in the air above the seats.
Oliver smiled nervously at Becki. “If this wasn’t so strange, it would be fun.”
A human shaped mist began to form as a girl’s voice started singing.
Can you guess who I am
It would mean so much to me
For you to come up with a plan
Seek light in a rift
It will be in hand
To set me free

Please free me
The misty shape vanished. And the flashlights came on, giving Becki and Oliver another fright. Both slowly lowered to their seats.
Oliver offered, “Whatever this spirit is, it is kind. I have watched movies where people get thrown around all over the place.”
“I’m sad to say that I think it’s Cynthia,” Becki said as a tear ran down her face.
Oliver put his arm around her shoulder. “Let’s not say just yet.”
Two loud knocks from overhead resounded in the car.
“It is Cynthia,” Becky whispered.
